Everyone is downloaded digital music these days.  The age of the “hard copy” of an album as the mainstay of any given music collection are long gone.  Now, most people store their music on their hard drives, carry it around on their smart phones or iPods, and share it with others at will.  DRM software seeks to protect music files from being shared indiscriminately, but people, as they are wont to do, have found ways to crack it.  Almost any song anyone could dream of can be obtained from the Internet at no charge, and the artist is robbed of his earnings for each act of piracy that takes place.  But, do artists really make all that much money from online downloads anyway?

Most recording artists record for one reason only:  to get their music out there to the public, so they can attract as many people as possible to their tours when they take their shows on the road.  Touring is what makes them money, not the sales of CDs or digital downloads.  So then, what is the real issue with DRM and the protection of music files on the Internet?  Do artists benefit very much from this practice, or does the free flow of tunes actually translate to more dollars earned on tour?  Check out this infographic to see how much money artists are making online:
